THE ANSWER:
W+ ANIMAL WELFARE COMMITMENT

Animal welfare is nowadays a concern for European consumers but also for producers, and this is a reality. Animal welfare certification seals are a valuable tool to easily and reliably distinguish products that have been produced with more animal welfare guarantees.

However, not all seals are the same. If you want to know what the differences are, what reliability and guarantees each one provides, we explain it in the following infographic:

Types of certifications

We show you how to differentiate them

SELF-DECLARATION:

The operator submits a declaration that is self-imposed or requested from an external entity and presents basic requirements. Its control is based on a self-declaration or supervision by the brand owner.

CERTIFICATION

The operator presents a certified mark issued by an external certification body.

ACCREDITED CERTIFICATION

The operator presents an accredited certified mark issued by an external certification body. In turn, the certification body is accredited by an independent third party (the accreditation body). Accreditation guarantees that the evaluation is carried out under the principles of independence, impartiality, transparency and objectivity.

WHAT DOES EACH INCLUDE?

WELFARE ON ALL FIVE SIDES

A certification that guarantees animal welfare and much more: discover our five areas of assessment

The W+ seal was created with the aim of being a reference for the consumer of the best animal welfare conditions and with the maximum guarantees, thanks to the accreditation system by a third party. The Spanish Interprofessionals Interovic and Provacuno make available to any Interprofessional, association or institution at Member State or European level, the technical specifications of this accreditable seal. For further information, please contact symposium_secretariat@europeananimalwelfare.eu

CONCLUSIONS

Maximum independence and reliability in the evaluation process is only guaranteed by Accredited Certification.

Accredited Certification ensures the technical competence of the certification bodies and therefore, they have the reliability that accreditation provides.

Accredited Certification guarantees that seals under this system do not have conflicts of interest with the parties involved.

Self-declaration is not certified.

Self-declaration is not certified.

As you can see, not all certifications are the same. For this reason, certification schemes accredited by ENAC have been developed that can guarantee with maximum reliability and transparency that beef, sheep and goat products come from animals that have been cared for with the utmost respect for their health and welfare. To distinguish it is really simple, just look for beef and sheep and goat products with the W+ Animal Welfare Commitment seal.

ACCREDITATION CAN ONLY BE GRANTED BY A NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BODY.

It is important to know that only National Accreditation Bodies can accredit certifications. Each country has its own National Accreditation Body. In Spain it is ENAC.

The W+ Animal Welfare Commitment seal for sheep and goats and beef cattle is a certification scheme accredited by ENAC.

NOT ALL CERTIFICATION
CAN BE ACCREDITABLE

Not all certificates can be accredited. In order to be accredited, they must first meet a series of minimum requirements to ensure their rigour and reliability:

Objectivity:
The certification scheme must be impartial and not influenced by external interests.
Transparency:
The processes and evaluation criteria used in the scheme must be clearly defined and communicated to stakeholders.
Competence of staff:
Staff participating in the certification scheme must have the necessary skills and knowledge.
Validity and reliability:
The certification scheme must be valid and reliable, meaning that it must measure what it purports to measure consistently and accurately.
Assessment requirements:
They must be clear and in line with relevant industry practices and standards.
Risk management:
The certification scheme must have a well-defined risk management process to address any issues that may arise during the assessment process.
Continuous improvement:
The certification scheme should be subject to a process of continuous improvement to ensure that it remains up to date and relevant over time.
